چکیده

Infrared emission has been detected from normal elliptical galaxies and from clusters of galaxies at 60μm and 100μm with the IRAS satellite. In both cases, the emission has the characteristics of cool dust with a temperature near 30K. For the elliptical galaxies, there is a correlation between the optical luminosities and the far infrared luminosities. The likely source of the dust in these systems is mass loss from stars, which is heated by starlight and either is distributed throughout the galaxy or falls into a central disk. Analysis of upcoming ISO data will permit us to distinguish between these possibilities. The far infrared emission from clusters of galaxies is of high luminosity but is only detected in 10% of the cases. The heating is either due to electron impact from the hot gas (a suitable explanation for one cluster) or photon absorption. The source of the dust is probably gas stripped from galaxies. For clusters, ISO data will provide good mass determinations and positions, thereby allowing us to determine the source of the heating.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Radio and Far-infrared Emission as Tracers of Star Formation and Agn in Nearby Cluster Galaxies

We have studied the radio and far-infrared (FIR) emission from 114 galaxies in the 7 nearest clusters (< 100 Mpc) with prominent X-ray emission to investigate the impact of the cluster environment on the star formation and AGN activity in the member galaxies. The X-ray selection criterion is adopted to focus on the most massive and dynamically relaxed clusters. A large majority of cluster galax...

Far-infrared Census of Starburst-seyfert Connection

Far-infrared flux densities are newly extracted from the IRAS database for the RSA and CfA complete samples of Seyfert galaxies. These data are used to classify the Seyfert galaxies into those where the far-infrared continuum emission is dominated by the active galactic nucleus (AGN), circumnuclear starburst, or host galaxy. While AGN-dominant objects consist of comparable numbers of Seyfert 1 ...

An IRAS High Resolution Image Restoration (HIRES) Atlas of All Interacting Galaxies in the IRAS Revised Bright Galaxy Sample

The importance of far-infrared observations in our understanding of extreme activity in interacting and merging galaxies has been illustrated by many studies. Even though two decades have passed since its launch, the most complete all-sky survey to date from which far-infrared selected galaxy samples can be chosen is still that of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). However, the spatial...

ISO’s Contribution to the Study of Clusters of Galaxies

Starting with nearby galaxy clusters like Virgo and Coma, and continuing out to the furthest galaxy clusters for which ISO results have yet been published (z = 0.56), we discuss the development of knowledge of the infrared and associated physical properties of galaxy clusters from early IRAS observations, through the “ISO-era” to the present, in order to explore the status of ISO’s contribution...
